2010 St. Mary's Oyster Festival : It was that time of year once again. When, for oyster lovers, the St. Mary’s County fairgrounds in Leonardtown transformed to nirvana. Oysters served up raw, scalded, grilled on the barbie, on bread, on the half shell, stewed, nude, cooked in savory sauces, in salads, even in desserts, just about every way imaginable and then some; at the 44th Annual St. Mary’s County Oyster Festival. This year's festival was held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16 and 17 at the St. Mary's County Fairgrounds.

10/3/2010 Solomons Boat Race : On Sunday, Oct. 3, the Patuxent River adjacent to Solomons Island roared with engines and the sights and sounds of power off-shore racing as power boats competed in the National Championship Race for the 2010 OPA Offshore Racing Series presented by GEICO. Beginning at noon and ending late afternoon on a cool, drizzling and blustery day, the races thundered across choppy waters to the thrill of many, lined up on Solomons Pier, along the boardwalk and around the waterfront to watch the world’s fastest watercraft take each other on in fierce, thunderous competition. Visitors enjoyed an entire weekend of vendors, racing, pit tours and more. The weekend’s activities offered something for everyone. Spectators and fans were able to tour the Race Village/Dry Pits area where they saw the boats up close, met the race teams, bought souvenirs and T's and much more. The grand prix race worked a challenging course which was laid out around the south side of the Patuxent River with top speeds hitting just over 100-mph. The first racing of the day began with the Class 4, 5 and 6 boats and was followed by featured races which included the world class speedster, Miss GEICO, which won the overall competition, clearly the class of the competition. Based upon the turn out and crowd many of the racing organizers expressed a desire to return next year and perhaps to make Solomons a permanent part of the tour. http://www.thebaynet.com/news/index.cfm/fa/viewstory/story_ID/19847

10/2/2010 Blessing of the Fleet : This past weekend, Oct. 2 and 3, the Annual Blessing of the Fleet brought visitors to picturesque St. Clements Island. Throughout the weekend many families enjoyed the variety of food and entertainment, which included live bands, performances and dazzling dance routines. Children found a lot to do with inflated playgrounds, a petting zoo, pony rides, magic and reptile shows and a competitive tractor pull. Arts and crafts booths, boat rides to the lighthouse, and civil war reenactment displays rounded out the fun-filled weekend. http://www.thebaynet.com/news/index.cfm/fa/viewstory/story_ID/19845

1/30/2010 14th Annual MSP Polar Bear Plunge : The 14th Annual MSP Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park raised over 2.8 million dollars for Special Olympics Maryland. Governor Martin O'Malley joined thousands of plungers who jumped into the icy and snowy Chesapeake. Also on hand were 3 members of the cast of the new movie “Hot Tub Time Machine” which will be released later this year. Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke donated $10,000 and helped kick off the event. Overall, about 25,000 participated in the 1 p.m. plunge, but the 3 p.m. plunge had to be cancelled because of the blizzard conditions that dropped five inches of snow on the park. http://www.plungemd.com/
